Abstract

Some individuals believe that basically having children is not an obligation, but rather a lifestyle choice. However, the decision not to have children often carries a negative stigma, especially in the context of religious norms. Among Generation Z, more and more are choosing to pursue a career rather than starting a family. A research was conducted to examine the childfree phenomenon among Gen Z from a religious perspective in Indonesia, using literature study as a method. Data collection was carried out through searching for sources from books, journals and previous research. The library materials found are analyzed critically to support propositions and ideas. This research aims to find problems, look for relevant data, research relevant ideas, look for theoretical foundations, and expand the author's understanding. Trends in views towards marriage are starting to change among Gen Z. Marriage is no longer only seen as a means of having children, but also as a form of self-expression. However, this view conflicts with certain religious teachings. Various religions, such as Islam, Protestant Christianity, Catholic Christianity and Hinduism, have views that reject the concept of childfree. Islam, for example, the Prophet Muhammad SAW. It is strictly forbidden to refuse offspring, while in Christianity it is explained in the Bible that there is a command to immediately give birth to offspring. This view is also found in Catholic Christian and Hindu teachings. Even though most religions reject the concept of childfree, research results show variations in views among Gen Z. Some support it because they see it as a lifestyle choice, while others disagree because of pressure from the family environment. As generational values and views change, further discussion is needed to understand the complex dynamics between religion, culture and life choices in the Gen Z era.
